Modelling and CFD

The use of CFD models are the basis for the optimization and design of ventilation systems in many applications.

Computational Fluid Dynamics (or CFD) modeling is a service offered by LABAQUA CFD software is a powerful tool for fluid dynamic calculations which is capable of modeling the behavior of fluids, pollutants and particles, in both the exterior and interior of buildings. This allows the evaluation and quantification of aspects as important as: renovation of the air inside an installation, the efficiency of an extraction system, air flow patterns, dispersion of pollutants, temperature profiles, etc. In making these calculations, certain aspects are taken into account, such as: the influence of external conditions (meteorology), openings in the structure (doors and windows), geometry (partitions, walls, and other obstacles), heat sources, types and locations of entrances and exits for air, etc.
Furthermore, it can also be used in studies to optimize hydrodynamic design of bioreactors in WWTPs.


In many cases where high efficiency rates of ventilation, or specific air quality is required, the criteria for establishing the design of ventilation systems are set by overly simplistic parameters such as renewals / hour, regardless of the singularities of the space being modeled (such as internal barriers, emitting units, required quality, etc.). This can result in investments in ineffective ventilation systems, whose subsequent operation involves some extra running costs that do not contribute to better indoor air quality; nor, in the case of industrial facilities, to properly treat the gases generated, which end up being emitted through doors and windows, affecting the area adjacent to the installations.


A significant part of the corrective actions undertaken in problematic facilities, assume the design or optimization of systems for confinement, collection and treatment of gases from industrial processes. Using CFD models is the basis for the design and optimization of such systems, through the following:

  • Improving the quality of air in inside the work place, resulting in greater comfort for operators, and increased lifetime of existing equipment and materials.
  • Reduced economic cost associated with energy consumption of the ventilation system (which can reach 15-25% reduction), as the number of renewals/hour is optimal for each situation.

Comparing the costs associated with a CFD simulation, against benefits from the reduction of costs of construction and future operation, the use of CFD models should be part of any engineering details in the field of ventilation.
