Access to and quality of drinking water are two of the problems of growing concern in the world, affecting the health of the population, not only for the origin of water sources, but for their treatment, management and unsafe storage .

In 2004 the European Regulation 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs, requires operators of Food Businesses (introducing the concept of "Drinking Water" as a food product) that food hazards must be identified and controlled, from primary production to the consumer, by applying a methodology HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points).

The World Health Organization (WHO) in the "Guidelines for Drinking Water Quality" proposes to water companies to apply to their Supplies the use of "Water Safety Plans" (WSP) that are based on HACCP methodology.

In 2005, ISO 22000 was approved. Management Systems for Food Safety, becoming consolidating as the internationally recognised reference standard, collecting together the principles of HACCP methodology and WSP, offering a unique solution for good practice worldwide, providing a framework of internationally accepted requirements and able to meet with different countries criteria.

The Implementation of a Management System for Drinking Water Safety under ISO 22000 will contribute, among other things, to the following objectives:
